POINTERS
A group exhibition of seven contemporary Finnish photographers.
The name of the exhibition refers to the way in which photography is a way of pointing out things in the world - and of simultaneously establishing one's own place in it.
These two aspects can be called (partly following Roland Barthes) the "aoristic" and "deictic" tendencies of photography. Photographs direct attention to singular events in an indefinite past ( aoristic from Gr. a-, not+ horistos definable, "without horizon". At the same time photographs can present only personal points of view - singular perspectives from a unique viewpoint (deixis).
...
Pointers examines this newly emerged and activated tension between the historical and personal aspects of photography. The images of the selected artists examine in diverse ways how that, which is close and near - personal experience - sometimes becomes combined with world events far away.
Some of the seven photographers openly witness this penetration of world media events into the realm of personal space. Other artists examine the division of time and space from a more contemplative position. In their works the artists study aspects of landscape, change, time, stage and memory from several creative perspectives. In Pointers these exacting and lyrical approaches intertwine - in the end often attesting to similar experiences.
...
The photographers of Pointers all originate or reside in the Pirkanmaa District around the city of Tampere, giving the works a very particualr flavour. At the same time the concept of "geographical area" - its meaning and perhaps also its meaningfulness - is placed under scrutiny. It becomes a kind of hidden theme for the exhibition. For it is clear that the exhibition deals with the way in which the mobility of contemporary photographers and news events do not honour bordres, that world events are present everywhere - and that we carry our personal experiences wherever we travel. Regionality is not bound by geographical borders. Images seek justcie everywhere, incessantly.
